Receiving the 13th Infrastructure Technology Development Awards in 2011

Fujita Corporation (President : Takuji Ueda) received the Prize for Excellence (presented by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation) at the 13th Infrastructure Technology Development Awards in 2011.

The prize is covered with wide range of technologies in order to improve the level of construction technologies, and the prize is recognized as very prestigious award.

The president and Dr.Murayama who developed the system attended the ceremony held on July 08 in 2011.

Upon winning the prize, Dr.Murayama mentioned as follows: "the SSRT method uses the tunnel excavating blast as a seismic source. During the development, I encountered some difficult problems, and sometimes I was at a loss. However, with the support of a collaborator (the Japan Geophysical Institute Inc) the development was progressed tremendously. The development was initiated ten years ago, and through the applications to 15 tunnel projects, the system has been polished by receiving various comments and suggestions from related engineers. In the future, not limited to this system, I hope to continue technology developments to meet needs of actual construction sites".

Fujita Corporation received the prize eight years ago as well.

Summary of the awarded technology

1. Awarded technology

Name of technology : SWE-SSRT (Seismic While Excavation using Shallow Seismic Reflection Survey for Tunnels)

Developers: Dr.Hideyuki Murayama, Mr.Hiromi Niwa (Fujita Corporation), Mr.Tetsuo Kuroda (Japan Geophysical Institute Inc)

Collaborator : Japan Geophysical Institute Inc.

2. Summary of the technology

By using the tunnel excavating blast as a seismic source, it is possible to predict geological conditions up to 300m ahead of the tunnel face. This method reduces exploration costs because it does not interrupt tunnel excavation works. The knowledge gained gives advance warning of any need for changes in the construction plan, improving safety and allowing any additional materials necessary to be ordered in plenty of time. Fujita Corporation developed SWE-SSRT in conjunction with the Japan Geophysical Institute Inc.
