Students of elementary school visited our shield tunnel site

94 students in fifth and sixth grade of the Takahama Municipal Elementary School in Matsuyama-city, Ehime Prefecture, visited our construction site for shield tunnel excavation (Ishihuro NO.1 Waterway Project implemented by a specific Joint Venture with Fujita Corporation and Yoshino Construction Corporation).

Firstly, our site engineers explained the outline of the project and shield tunneling method. Then two parties of students walked in the shield tunnel (with a diameter of 2m and a length of 900m) for 140 m from the entrance. While walking, they gave glad cries because they experienced situations of an inner tunnel for rain flood control for the first time.

Questions were given such as "Why this tunnel is not excavated straightly?" or "What is the eight of a segment?" and so on. Also, they gave impressions such as "It was very fun" or "This is amazing" and so on. We think the students learnt measures for flooding and actual constriction works.

We positively continue this activity in order for children to learn pleasure to work in construction industry and to nurture attention to environments and urban developments.
