Fujita Corporation's On-site Wastewater treatment with water quality Monitoring (FOWM) is a drainage and decontamination system for water contaminated with caesium, "F.O.W.M."

Fujita Corporation (Headquarter: Tokyo Shibuya-ku, President: Takuji Ueda) has developed an on-site decontamination system for removing radioactive cesium from water at contaminated sites in Fukushima Prefecture. This portable system is named "Fujita's On-site Wastewater treatment with water quality Monitoring (FOWM System)"; it also monitors radioactive concentration of the contaminated water. Its compact size and portability make it well suited for the use in residential areas and on narrow streets. The included turbidity meter and underwater radio-scope facilitate high quality and safe wastewater drainage management.

This system contains a main water tank to store the decontaminated wastewater, a coagulation sediment tank to eliminate suspended elements from the wastewater, a filtration tank to eliminate residual solids, and a processing tank to store and monitor the decontaminated water. The radioactive concentration is being monitored in the processing tank with using the turbidity meter (*1) and the underwater radio-scope. The vacuum machine safely assembles contaminated sludge in sandbags.

We selected a compact size, lightweight devices and machineries for this system so it can be loaded on a 1-ton vehicle. Unlike the traditional portable wastewater treatment system which requires a 4-ton vehicle, our new system offers greatly improved portability. Therefore, it is particularly useful for decontamination works in residential areas and on narrow streets with relatively smaller amounts of contaminated wastewater.

Another notable characteristic of this system is that it has a turbidity meter and an underwater radio-scope. It is possible to maintain the radioactive concentration of the wastewater below standard value at all times when discharged, since both instruments determine the measurements in just a few minutes. By combining a turbidity meter that measures the radioactive concentration indirectly, and an underwater radioactive-scope which directly measures the radiation dose, it ensures greater certainty as to the safety of the decontaminated water (patent pending).

With the aim to promote safe decontamination, we would like to employ this system for not only decontaminating small amount of wastewater, but also for quality control of wastewater disposal derived from incineration and washing of contaminated wastes.

※1 Turbidity: It measures the clarity of water. There is a correlation between turbidity of contaminated water and radioactive concentration since the most radioactive caesium are strongly attached to soil particles in the water and are not liquated out in water.
