Development of CO2 monitoring system "FCMS" for construction sites

Fujita Corporation has developed a system called "FCMS : Fujita CO2 Monitoring System" to monitor the volume of CO2 emissions produced in construction sites. In this system, CO2 measurement devices are attached to different emission sources such as construction vehicles, and the data collected is uploaded to the cloud. In addition electricity consumption at the construction sites is monitored at all times and the data is stored on the server. We applied to a building construction site in Tokyo and a civil engineering construction site in Kanagawa Prefecture to verify the effectiveness of the system. By using this system, measurements of CO2 emissions from specific regions including specific construction sites can be made, the effect of CO2 reduction activities can be evaluated, and the monitoring results can also be used for planning of further countermeasures. In addition, operators of construction equipments can get information on the volume of CO2 emissions at all times, leading to further improvement of environmental consciousness in construction sites.

In the future, the development of alert sub-systems such as idling stop alarm, excess fuel consumption alarm and other related systems will be made to further promote CO2 reduction effectiveness.

The characteristics of this system are;

  1. RPM (revolutions per minute) measurements from the internal-combustion engines of construction equipment can be easily measured and the correlation between RPM and the volume of CO2 emissions can be obtained in advance, which enables checking of the state of CO2 emissions precisely. In addition, the system can be cheaply attached to equipment without any modifications.
  2. The power meters used are commercially available ones. However, the programs for measurement, transmission, process and display of data were developed in-house. Accordingly, various data can be uploaded to the server. Through continuous real-time monitoring, evaluation of the effectiveness of energy saving measures and the changes in emission volumes from year to year can be understood.
